OLUMO WORRIOR (ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA)
Date
AUGUSST 2023
Located in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, Olumo Rock lends its name to the city, “Abeokuta,” meaning “under the rock.” As one of Nigeria’s most notable landmarks, this historic fortress symbolizes strength and unity, towering visibly from miles away.
The rock originally served as a sanctuary for the Egba people, offering them refuge and a strategic vantage point to monitor enemy movements, ultimately aiding in their victory during times of conflict. Over time, Abeokuta expanded as these settlers spread from their initial settlement around Olumo Rock.
Abeokuta is also referred to as “Oko Adagba” (Adagba’s Farm) by its founding fathers, named after Adagba, the hunter who discovered Olumo Rock. Adagba stumbled upon the rock while hunting for game near the Obantoko area, where his fellow Itoko community members were in search of a new settlement.
